REIDSVILLE – The Baby Rams of Reidsville jumped out to 24-0 first half lead Thursday night against Morehead and coasted to a 32-7 non-conference junior varsity victory in the season opener at Community Stadium.
Reidsville scored plays of 7, 18, 5 and 60 yards as it finished the game with 221 yards. MHS, which is learning both a new offense and defense, had its share of struggles on both sides of the ball as it mustered only 118 yards.
Kersee King provided 76 of those yards on Morehead’s lone score of the night, as he broke loose for a touchdown run where he went untouched for the final 65. The rest of the game belonged to the home team.
The first half told the story as Reidsville recorded three touchdowns, 149 yards and 10 first downs, while MHS had zero points, 25 yards and one first down.
RHS marched 58 yards in eight plays on its first offensive series of the game. After both teams combined for five penalties in the first five plays, the Baby Rams stuck to the ground led by quarterback LaVert Butchee, Butchee recorded 12 yards on two carries, but Stephen Williams scored the first touchdown from seven yards out with 4:06 left in the opening quarter. Butchee’s conversion pass to Williams was successful.
After holding Morehead to two yards on fourth and 33 from the Panther 33-yard line, RHS appeared to have scored on a 35-yard scoring pass from Butchee to Kenzell Doe, but a penalty brought the ball back. On fourth and goal from the 18, the Butchee to Doe connection hooked up again, this time for an 18-yard scoring strike.
A sack by Reidsville’s Bryon Johnson caused another three-and-out for the Panthers.
Reidsville’s next scoring drive saw the home team go 59 yards in 10 plays, capped off by a five-yard touchdown from Josh Harden. Harden was a key factor on offense finishing with 27 yards on five carries in the first half of play.
The first half finally came to an end for Morehead as Reidsville’s Michael Allen picked off a Jawaan Winfield pass with less than a minute left.
MHS started the second half with A.J. Artis recovering a RHS fumble on the third play, but the team’s struggled continued gaining five yards in three plays. Butchee found Doe for a screen pass moment later in which Doe appeared he was going to lose about five yards on the play. However, the freshman broke two tackles and raced 60 yards for the final Baby Ram score.
Butchee finished the game going 5 of 10 for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
King’s touchdown run came three plays following Reidsville’s final score. King ended up with 118 yards on 20 carries. The rest of the team ran for zero yards on 10 carries.
Williams led the Baby Ram rushing attack gaining 42 yards on 7 carries.
Both teams will return to action next Thursday. The Baby Rams will host Cummings, while Morehead hosts McMichael.
The games will start at 7 p.m.
